The African National Congress (ANC) has condemned chaos that erupted in a meeting of party leaders in Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands on Monday.

Weapons were drawn when a group of branch members stormed into the meeting, insisting that they were being side-lined from the gathering.

The meeting had been called to discuss the readiness of the regional and provincial elective congress to be held in May.

ANC Provincial Interim Committee Coordinator Sihle Zikalala says the situation could have been handled better.

“If we are aggrieved, we should be able to follow processes such as appeal and as structures we must listen to all complaints that come from branches. So it was incorrect for members of the ANC to forcefully enter a meeting where they were not invited. Secondly, it was also incorrect for bodyguards to pull guns in a meeting of the ANC. We will be attending to that situation which we believe should have been handled differently from the beginning.”

Zikalala says the incident is a reflection of tension within the party in the province.

“It is a reflection of tension that we must confront and calm down and address and as the provincial interim committee we are working on addressing such things. We believe that with the programmes we have and the support from the national leadership, we will be able to address all of these issues.”
