The African National Congress (ANC) has called for calm as tensions heighten among its members over the party’s nomination process ahead of the local government elections.

At least three people were killed at an ANC meeting in Inanda north of Durban at the weekend.

On Monday, the volatile nomination process played itself out at the party’s Luthuli House headquarters in Johannesburg where dozens of ANC members protested.

ANC concerned over violent incidents at its gatherings – Sandile Swana:

They say their preferred choices for councillors were ignored and instead the regional and provincial structures put in their own people.

This is despite the ANC having set last Saturday as the deadline for all disputes in the nomination of its would-be councillors for the November 1 elections.

ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe has urged party members to respect the choices of communities.
