The African National Congress top leadership is to convene an emergency National Executive Committee meeting to reach a consensus on how to avoid the possible collapse of the party’s leadership elective conference.

On Friday court’s rulings nullifying the leadership of Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Free-State and Bojanala region in the North-West, have sparked fears that the staging of the five-day gathering scheduled to resume in Soweto south of Johannesburg on Saturday could be delayed indefinitely.

On the eve of the conference outgoing party President Jacob Zuma called for unity amongst the governing party’s warring factions.

This is the battle for his successor intensifies between two front-runners his Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa and former chairperson of the African Union Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

“The advice that I have to give is that the organisation has been having some challenges.  The leader must lead us in unity of the ANC.  We need to get rid of the factions.  Nobody must feel that this is not my leader.”

President Zuma says it is unfortunate that ANC disputes have to be taken to court.
