Amnesty International calls for Phiyega’s suspension

Amnesty International has called for President Jacob Zuma to suspend those behind the Marikana killings that took place near Rustenburg, North West.

The organisation says all police officers implicated in the killings must be suspended immediately pending the outcome of further
investigations. They say the President should start by suspending National Police Commissioner, Riah Phiyega.

The organisation says it is concerned that not a single member of the SAPS has been suspended or held to account.

Amnesty International Director for Southern Africa, Deprose Muchena says three years on, the shock of the killings still resonates with all victims, with uncertainty as to whom will be held responsible for the deaths of 44 people during an unprotected strike at Lonmin Platinum Mine.

Muchena says all perpetrators should be brought to justice.

This as the country prepares to commemorate the third anniversary of the Marikana massacre on August 16 where at least 34 minerss were gunned down in Marikana on the 16th of August 2012, during a clash between police and the striking Lonmin employees.

Employees were demanding a R12 500, but the strike had turned violent in the days leading to the fateful day.
