Amcu strikes costs mining industry over R23,4 billion

Around 70 000 Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) members at Lonmin, Implats and Amplats went on strike in January demanding an entry-level salary of R12 500 a month. The nearly six-month long wage strike on the platinum belt came to end on the 23 June 2014.

South Africa accounts for 40% of global platinum output. The strike cost the industry over R23,4 billion in lost earnings.
