AmaZulu Football Club legend Sugar Ray Xulu has died. The 81-year-old Xulu died in hospital after battling cancer in recent years.

The former AmaZulu Football Club legend passed away on Monday at Marainhilll Hospital in the Durban metro.

The Clermont football stadium has been named the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in his honour.

AmaZulu Football Club General manager Lunga Sokhela says Xulu has suffered from ill health for a long time.

“We got confirmation from the family last night (Monday night) that Bab Sugar Ray is no more. Bab Sugar Ray has suffered from ill health for some time now.  More cancer which attacked him. We got the news last night that he succumbed to it. I’m one hand we feel the sadness but at the same time, we also feel now that he is in a better place. Because he has been battling. In the recent past.”

Sokhela described Xulu as a legend and a quiet person who supported Amazulu throughout.

“Bab Sugar Ray Xulu is a very quiet humble man. Very soft-spoken. He played football way being his sports field and spent the majority of his time with Zulu totals and the Amazulu Football club. He would come to matches and really encourage the young generation to emulate the kind of things that they achieved in their playing.”
