Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s Ethics Manager Amar Maharaj could face legal action for giving false information to the Moerane Commission, this according to IPID’s National Head of Investigations Matthews Sesoko.

He was testifying before the Commission currently sitting in Pietermaritzburg.

Sesoko claims Maharaj presented false evidence before the commission.

He also disputed that IPID offices in KwaZulu-Natal were dysfunctional and that police involved in killings at Glebelends hostel were not arrested.

He said complaints relating to the Glebelands Hostel killings were a small fraction.

Sesoko says Maharaj’s allegations were fuelled by an internal feud between him and his boss Robert McBride.

In August, Maharaj testified that cases were closed by IPID in KZN without proper investigation to boost performance statistics.

IPID National head of investigations Matthews Sesoko elaborates, “It’s misleading without factual basis and understanding of IPID investigation processes. Once there are issues between him and management he goes out and makes such allegations.”

Other witnesses to the commission alleged that police were suspected of supplying hostel hit men with firearms, but IPID says there was never enough evidence to back the claims.

Sesoko says of this, “Unfortunately there was no information with regards to tangible information that can assist the investigation to be able to get to the bottom of who are the officers involved and the extent which we can be able to charge them.”

IPID says it’s got a backlog of cases and its currently experiencing financial constraints as a result it will close down its Empangeni office in two months’ time.
