Reading Time: 2 minutes

The African National Congress (ANC) and its alliance partners have welcomed party president, Cyril Ramaphosa‘s first January 8 Statement, saying it goes to the heart of issues facing South Africans.

SACP national chairperson, Senzeni Zokwana says now that the alliance is headed by a new president, they need to continue to support him and efforts must be made to unite with the Communist Party, Cosatu and Sanco.

Ramaphosa delivered his address to a packed Absa Stadium in East London in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.

A jubilant and happy crowd welcomed newly-elected ANC president. But, it was not long before they expressed their dissatisfaction with their former leader and current president of the republic, Jacob Zuma.

His name was mentioned and placed on the big screen. And, his late arrival caught the attention of the current National Chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, who stated to president Zuma that there was a new man in charge and late coming won’t be tolerated.

President Zuma was subsequently booed when acknowledged by Mantashe. However, the crowd cheered every time his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta, was mentioned.

Meanwhile, former ANC Treasurer General, Zweli Mkhize says the January 8 Statement, which was delivered by Ramaphosa, gives a clear direction on the problems they will be tackling in the near future.

NEC member and Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba says he’s glad that the statement also prioritized the economy.

Another ANC NEC member and former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu also weighed in on the statement, saying it was well received by party members and South Africans in general.

Meanwhile, supporters who attended the rally said they were satisfied with Ramaphosa’s address.

Real work now begins for the ANC. Next week the party is expected to hold an NEC meeting.
