President Jacob Zuma says alleviating poverty remains government’s top priority.

In August 2017, Statistics South Africa released figures that indicated that poverty was on the increase in the country.

According to Stats SA Poverty Trends report, more than half of South Africa’s about R55-million population is living in poverty.

However, in his New Year’s message, President Zuma says government is determined to improve the quality of lives of the poor.

“The improvement of the quality of life of our people especially the poor and working class remains a key priority of government, fighting poverty, inequality and unemployment.”

President Zuma has sought to explain government’s plans to ensure that the country’s economy gets back on track.

Although South Africa emerged from a technical recession, credit rating agencies downgraded it to junk status.

In his New Year’s message, President Zuma has conceded that South Africa has been facing serious economic challenges in the year that is about to end.
