Alleged hijacker shot and killed in Cape Town

Cape Town Police have shot and killed an alleged hijacker during a shoot out in Macassar.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk says shop owners flagged down a police vehicle and reported that they had just been hijacked by armed men.

They pointed out the vehicle with the alleged hijackers to the officers, who set off in pursuit of the vehicle.

Van Wyk says police opened fire and the vehicle came to an abrupt halt.

The driver got out and fell to the ground. He died on the scene in Mfuleni. Two unlicensed firearms were recovered.

His passenger, a 23-year-old man was apprehended and will appear in court on Monday on charges of attempted murder, hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms.
