An employee at the Garden Route Mall in George in the Western Cape, where alleged underworld kingpin Mark Lifman was gunned down, says she is still in shock after seeing his body.
The 57-year-old was shot and killed in the mall’s parking lot. Lifman was scheduled to appear in the High Court today on a number of charges, including the murder of steroid smuggler, Brian Wainstein.
That case has been postponed to later this month.
After learning that Lifman was an alleged crime boss, those present at the crime scene say they are now scared.
“We feel so sad about what happened here at Garden Route Mall. We came out of the shop and saw a lot of people with lots of vans. When we got there, we saw a person lying down after being shot by unknown people. While we didn’t hear the gunshots, we are scared here and we do not feel safe.”
The NPA says the state will continue with the prosecution of alleged underworld gang bosses Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, André Naude and several co-accused.
Lifman was scheduled to appear in the High Court today alongside Booysen, Naude and several others on a number of charges.
NPA spokesperson, Eric Ntabazalila, “The state can confirm that the matter of Mark Lifman and others has been postponed until Monday next week the state will hand over the death certificate and continue with the prosecution of the remaining accused. The state does not intend to drop the charges against the remaining accused, the defence has indicated that they might need longer than a week but we will advise the court by Friday.”
