Allegations of 19-year-old raping grade eight learner shock Limpopo education authorities

Limpopo Education authorities have expressed shock over allegations that a Grade eight learner was sexually abused by a 19-year-old at a village outside Thohoyandou.

The mother of the girl has opened a statutory rape case against the suspect who is allegedly a Grade 12 learner at the Phophi Secondary School at Tshamulungwi village.

The victim has since been removed from the school.

Department Spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene says they have made the matter their priority.

“We have just been recently alerted to allegations of rape amongst learners at Phophi Secondary school and of course these are serious allegations that we do not take lightly, and that is why the district director for Vhembe East area has undertaken to have the matter investigated. This investigation will be guided by our internal procedures and policies. We are prioritising this and hope it can be finalised as soon as possible.”
