Statistic South Africa in the Eastern Cape says it’s all systems go for the official start of the nationwide Census tomorrow. One of their focus areas is to accurately compile adequate data on homeless people.

Stats SA say they have identified 64 areas in the province, to collect the data on homeless people.

The nationwide population and housing census will be conducted from the 3rd to the 28th of this month.

Eastern Cape Head of Stats SA, Ziyanda Ntlebi says working with various law enforcement and NGOs will be critical in the counting of homeless people.

“So, today we start with the homeless population. So, we have identified the spots. We have about 64 spots in the province. We will have our field workers to ensure that they are counted. So, we have been preparing to locate these spots. So, we are working with our police stations and NGO’s and soup kitchens as they know where to actually find them. So, we will be working with them and start counting from 9pm tonight,” says Ziyanda Ntlebi.
