Alexandra Community Radio Station, Alex FM, has been ransacked earlier on Tuesday and is currently off air. The management of the station says studio computers, equipment, and infrastructure worth about R5 million have been looted by residents.
They say a presenter who was live on air managed to escape without harm.
Alex FM station manager, Takalane Nemangowe, says this is sad as the community has no ratio station now.
“I got here at around 3 am in the morning, when I got a call from the security that the criminals they just entered the radio station and they looted. They took everything. Our broadcasting equipment, working equipment computers. There is no radio station. We are off air now. The community of Alexandra is being robbed off of a voice. They don’t have a voice today. We are just happy that none of our members were hurt. Come month end we are to be unable to meet our monthly obligation. So I feel for these young people that have been employed at Alex FM.”
Looting and violence has rocked Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal following the incarceration of former President, Jacob Zuma last week.
