The South African Alcohol Policy Alliance has welcomed Government’s decision to continue the ban on the sale of alcohol. As the country begins level-4 of the nationwide lockdown from 1 May, most of the regulations will remain in place.
However, some industries will be allowed to slowly start operating again.
The sale of cigarettes will be allowed.

There will also be a curfew from 8 pm to 5 am and it will be mandatory to wear a mask when leaving your home.
National coordinator for the alliance, Morris Smithers says, “The Minister of Health said to defeat the virus we have to rely on people’s sober judgments. Alcohol reduces an individual’s capacity to do this.’’

Meanwhile, the owner of a shop at Monavoni in Centurion, south of Pretoria, and four of his employees have been arrested for allegedly selling cigarettes before the commencement of the level four lockdown restrictions. Police say they got a tip-off.
The sale of cigarettes has been banned since the start of lockdown last month.
South Africa has been widely praised for its measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
