Albert Luthuli’s family wants his murder case reopened

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The family of former ANC leader Albert Luthuli has called for the investigation into his death to be reopened.

The Nobel prizewinner was found dead at a railway line at Groutville on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast 50 years ago.

The family says the apartheid government could have been responsible for his death. There have also been reports of inside fighting in the ANC of Luthuli, as some regarded him as too moderate.

Luthuli’s daughter, Albertina Luthuli says the family will find closure when they establish what had happened.

“When he passed away it was during the dark days of apartheid. So, we believe the government of the day which was the Nationalist Party really has something to answer regarding my father’s death. Beyond what exists the forensic doctors would do and say what the health minister of the time told them. So, it makes it very difficult for us to move away from his death.”

KwaZulu-Natal ANC Chairperson Sihle Zikalala says the request will be discussed by the ruling party. Zikalala says it’s important that the family finds closure.

“Such issues will be taken with the structures of the ANC because it is not even known even today why he was found dead at the railway line. There are no satisfying answers. So, it is the issue that must first be processed by the structures of the ANC.”
