Ajax move out the relegation zone with Chippa victory

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Ajax Cape Town dug deep to secure their first win in five matches with a 1-0 Premiership victory over Chippa United at the Bidvest Stadium on Saturday night.

For Chippa, who played the whole of the second half with 10 men and ended the match with nine men, the defeat brought to an end a run of 10 league matches without defeat.

The Port Elizabeth side made the early running and had chances on goal as Paseka Mako headed over goal, before Sizwe Mdlinzo skidded a shot wide and James Okwuosa stung the hands of Ajax keeper Jody February.

But it was the Urban Warriors who were to score first when Thabo Mosadi burst down the right wing before blistering in a shot from a very tight angle past Chippa stopper Daniel Akpeyi and into the roof of the net.

Akpeyi was kept busy, doing brilliantly to save Tashrique Morris’ close-range volley on the half hour mark before pushing a dangerous cross by Grant Margeman to safety.

It got worse for the Chilli Boys when Zitha Macheke was red-carded for a nasty studs-up challenge on Mosadi, although Mako was close to pulling a goal back in first half added time with another headed effort.

The second stanza saw the action drying up as a 10-man Chippa battled to create openings against an Ajax side happy to get numbers behind the ball. Even the introduction of several attacking changes by coach Teboho Moloi proved largely fruitless as the Cape Town side comfortably preserved their advantage.

Sedwyn George did, however, waste two great chances to add more goals for the Urban Warriors when he struck two shots straight at Akpeyi.

The Nigerian international shot-stopper was also red-carded deep in added time after he flew out his box to take down a goal-bound Mosadi, as the Urban Warriors made it through to full time with their lead intact.
