Agang SA

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Agang SA is a party formed by anti-apartheid activist, Mamphela Ramphele in 2013. But perhaps what the movement will be remembered for is its failed marriage with the Democratic Alliance in less than 5 days.

On 28 January 2014, Ramphele and the DA made headlines when they announced that for the first time the DA would have a black presidential candidate in Ramphele. However, internal squabbles pertaining to the merger of the two parties saw the much-talked about merger come down crumbling, dealing a detrimental blow to both parties’ 2014 election campaigns.

Some of the party’s commitment include a clean government, constitutional democracy and vision for the future, where the party aims “to make decisions based on what’s best for the next generation, not short-term gain or maintaining political power.

The party aims to transform Education and make the country’s education system top in the world; safety and security; public service, keeping “public money where it is meant to be: invested in people, not in corruption pockets”; economy by increasing job creation, boosting infrastructure and encouraging small business and entrepreneurship; and health by tackling HIV, TB, maternal and child mortality, among other issues.

Ramphela says Agang is to give SA citizen opportunity to govern.
