AfriForum unhappy at turn of events in Grace Mugabe case

Reading Time: 2 minutes

AfriForum lawyer, Willie Spies has labelled as ‘a political game’ the Zimbabwean High Commission’s decision to withdraw its participation in the matter to review the diplomatic immunity granted to Grace Mugabe.

The matter was brought by model Gabriela Engels and the civil rights group, AfriForum.

The applicants approached the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to seek permission to serve Mugabe with papers through the high commission in Pretoria.

Mugabe allegedly assaulted Engels at a Sandton hotel in August.

Advocate Simba Chitando‚ representing the Zimbabwean High Commission, claims he has been receiving threats.

Spies elaborates says, “As far as I am concerned, it is a process that is as fair as can be and this was dealt with by legal representatives for AfriForum in the most appropriate way thinkable. The allegations by Chitando to be honest are far fetched. If they were inappropriate I would like to see what these allegations were and I would like to deal with them.”

“I have no doubt in my mind that this is just a political game that’s being played by people who know that they are on the wrong side of the law and justice and they have no leg to stand on,” adds Spies.
