African parties should join forces in fighting white supremacy: Zuma

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former president Jacob Zuma says it’s high time that African political parties join forces in fighting white supremacy. Zuma has warned parties that if they don’t unite against whites they will soon lose the country.

He was addressing the Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu Memorial lecture in uMkuze in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Celebrating the lives of stalwarts and world icons the KwaZulu-Natal government organised the memorial lecture in honour of former apartheid era leaders.

Sisulu was the first female president of the United Democratic Front  (UDF) and Mandela the first black president of South Africa. Both were prominent opponents of the injustice in the country.

The former president warned political parties that if they don’t unite, whites will lead forever. He called on spiritual leaders to help unite South Africans.

“I want to appeal to you spiritual leaders to please assist Africans. If we are not united, calling each other by names, the whites will rule for ever. We sometimes speak in tongues even when we talk about land issues.”

He also warned against those who continue to divide political parties by starting new parties. “We must not allow clever people who always suggest that we must establish new party, they are dividing us. Because they know that in the democracy the bigger number rule. We are a bigger number but we cannot rule because we are divided.”

Interfaith leaders committed to heeding the call. Faith Leader Vusi Dube says: “It’s a great challenge for some of us who are members of the ANC that it’s high time that we unite our organisation.”

Meanwhile, Zuma dismissed claims by some people that Mandela sold out the struggle.
