Africa is experiencing a new form of colonialism where former colonial masters are still controlling Africa’s resources, says EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu.

Shivambu gave an Africa Day lecture at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein.

He says Africa needs a new generation that will lead it towards total economic emancipation.

Speaking on Morning Live, he says African countries need to trade amongst themselves in order to develop their economies.

Africa Day is commemorated across the continent on Thursday.

South Africa is the only country where it’s not a public holiday.

Africa Day celebrates the formation of the Organisation of African union (OAU), established on this day in 1963.

It was replaced by the African Union in 2002. The continental body was created to promote unity in Africa.

Shivambu says the formation of the OAU never addressed what was to happen post colonialism, hence a new generation of leaders is needed to take Africa forward.
