Africa CDC to investigate new variant of coronavirus

On Monday, the President said there have been 50 000 new cases over the past week as a new variation of the coronavirus is spreading through the population.

The number of new coronavirus cases in Africa has increased by 10% since last week.

More than 2.5 million infections have been recorded on the continent. The Africa Centre for Disease Control says the despite an intense second wave – the recovery rate is sitting above 85 percent.

The CDC is worried about surges stemming from the current holiday period. Meanwhile – South Africa has caused concern as it records a 40% jump in new infections and an increase of 23% in COVID-19 related deaths in the last week.
