The Mayor of Kokstad, Bheki Mtolo, says a statue of Adam Kok the third – the leader of the Griqua people – is to be unveiled by Deputy President David Mabuza, as the country observes Heritage Day.
Mabuza is expected to deliver the keynote address at the National Heritage Day event in KwaZulu-Natal.

Dozens of people – several clad in traditional attire – are streaming into the Riverview stadium for the celebrations.
Mtolo says they’re also renaming the Greater Kokstad Municipality building.

“We will go to the main office of the municipality, which is now Adam Kok the third Building, which has been named after Adam Kok and we will unveil the statue. Then we will come to the main event.”
“The idea comes as a government programme of reconciliation and making sure that we transform the cultural landscape. We thought we need to recognise Adam Kok because he led thousands of Griquas to establish peace in the land and Kokstad as the capital of Griqualand,” adds Mtolo.
