Reading Time: 2 minutes

The accused in the murder of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa have taken on new legal representation ahead of the trial.

Four of the five accused told the Pretoria High Court they will now be represented by the same council.

The group is facing charges for the death of Meyiwa at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus in 2014.

The four accused in shackles made a brief appearance at the Pretoria High Court.

The courtroom was heavily guarded with armed police officers.

The accused appeared to confirm their new legal representatives.

The group is adamant that they played no part in the murder of the star footballer in 2014.

The trial is set to begin on the 11th of April.

Twist

Last year, there was another twist in Meyiwa’s murder when the family lawyer said he’s been asked to drop them.

Advocate Malesela Teffo claims others have tried to persuade him to stop assisting the Meyiwa family in their quest for justice.

In 2020,  Lobby group AfriForum’s legal head Advocate Gerry Nel said he is more convinced that the killing of Meyiwa was not a robbery that went wrong, as initially reported, but a contract killing.

“Yes, of course, I know someone, but I will not disclose and prejudice the case further. It is a long view that I held for a while now, that this was not just a robbery that went wrong, but this was a contract killing. Somebody gave the instruction,” he said.
