A total of 12 people, including three pedestrians, have died on various roads of the Eastern Cape over the weekend.

This also includes several people who have sustained injuries and were rushed to hospitals across the province.

Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose says cases of culpable homicide have been opened by the police.

“What is alarming for us is to see the number of pedestrians that have been knocked by vehicles. Over the past couple of days, a lot of attention is being paid to motorists, but we are calling on pedestrians to be extra cautious and ensure that they abide by the rules of the road. One of the things that we have constantly called for is for pedestrians to put away those gadgets that turn to divide or take away their concentration from what is happening around them. So we are making a plea to try and stop carnage on our roads,” says Binqose.

There were a number of other crashes in the country at the weekend, including outside Potchefstroom in North West where two men were killed and in the Free State, 14 people died after two minibus taxis collided on the road between Reitz and Petrus Steyn.
