Absa Premiership title race this weekend

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In what was undoubtedly the surprise result of the penultimate round when they suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Maritzburg United last weekend, SuperSport United now go into their final Absa Premiership game against Highlands Park at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday with redemption in mind.

United head into the game on sixth spot and guaranteed a top eight finish.

Highlands sit in eighth and Matsatsantsa coach Kaitano Tembo says his charges will have to close off what has been an on and off campaign with a positive result against a tricky Owen da Gama side.

Matsatsantsa have claimed 25 points from 14 home matches this season, with their last result as hosts a 1-1 draw with Bidvest Wits in late April.

In his first full season in charge, the Zimbabwean-born coach reflects back on a season where they lost the MTN 8 Final and were stern title contenders at some point.

Tembo says the club are undecided as to whether they will sign winger George Lebese and striker Mxolisi Mchunu on a permanent basis.

The duo have been on loan at United during the second half of the season after they found themselves frozen out at rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits respectively.

The move to Matsatsantsa has certainly done the pair well but Tembo says their parent clubs hold the key.

In addition to Lebese and Macuphu, Matsatsantsa are yet make a decision on the future of veteran centre-backs Morgan Gould and Clayton as well as striker James Keet whose contracts are up and Tembo says a decision on them will be made soon.

Only midfield engine Reneilwe Letsholonyane is confirmed to be on his way out of the club.

The veteran midfielder joined Matsatsantsa in 2016 from Kaizer Chiefs, but could not agree to terms on a new contract with United.

Yeye has played 16 times for SuperSport under Kaitano Tembo this season and will now seek greener pastures elsewhere.

Tembo sheds light into Yeye’s exit:

With each of the 16 PSL teams playing for something this weekend, the 2018/19 campaign has been a tightly-contested affair set to go down to the wire not only as far as the title race is concerned but with a fierce relegation battle as well.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns are in pole position going into the final day and will look to avoid a costly last-minute slip-up against relegation-threatened Free State Stars, whilst the Buccaneers on the other hand no longer have their fate in their hands and will be hoping Sundowns fluff.

Tembo is confident Sundowns will be crowned champions once again. – Tumi Gabonamong
