AbaBhemu – A Virtual Tour

Reading Time: < 1 minute

If a picture paints a thousand words then a virtual tour paints hundreds of thousands. Festival has so many arts exhibitions throughout Grahamstown, and many of them you won’t even see in the programme.

One of these is AbaBhemu. This is an exhibition by 3 different Durban-based artists – each with his own unique style of art but all relating to the same concept.

According to the artist, AbaBhemu is a Zulu name for someone who is a leader or hero within a community. One of the artists, Sthenjwa Luthuli, stated that this person doesn’t have to be a leader but can merely be a voice of the people.

The group exhibition is inspired by the things the three artists see in the environment or in the spaces around them. It is available for viewing everyday in the Steve Biko Building on your way to the Transnet Village Green Fair.

Artists:
Nthobisi Mapumulo (painter and print maker)
Sthenjwa Luthuli (print maker – the sensual series)
Lwazi Zoro Xaba (photographer)
