Late South African Jazz legend, Hugh Masekela, has been honoured with a Memorial Pavilion at the West Park cemetery in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The monument is also in celebration of what would have been his 80th birthday on the 4th of April.

Its design is inspired by African burial rituals and practices.

The Masekela family described the Memorial Pavilion and garden as “a place to gather, reflect and celebrate his life.”

Bra Hugh, as he was affectionately known, played a pivotal role in advocating for freedom during the apartheid era. He gained international recognition by traveling the world to spread the message of hope through his music for South Africans in exile.

Masekela died in January 2018 after losing his battle with prostate cancer.
