‘A lot still needs to be done by government’

A 35-year-old Good Samaritan is determined to help keep youngsters in school so that they can contribute meaningfully to South Africa’s democracy. Zama Khokhela was born and raised in the Balfour farming area of the Eastern Cape and is now a successful engineer in Johannesburg.

Last year, he and some friends started an initiative to give shoes to disadvantaged children in order to keep them in school. His former primary school has also benefitted.
