Poor children in Gauteng will be given free groceries from next week. Acting Social Development, MEC Panyaza Lesufi, has announced a multi- million rand project to cushion about 160 000 children in the province.
The children will also access free education from all state schools and they will also be given bursaries to advance their studies at tertiary institutions.
Lesufi says they will be using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to prevent fraud.
“There will be free transport to school, two hot meals daily. They will receive one month worth of groceries every month until they are 18 when we evaluate their status. We have something called the Food Bank.”
Today, we started the process to make poverty history in Gauteng. We also launched a basket of benefits for children who are trapped in poverty. So from this Christmas no poor child will go to bed with an empty stomach. #LetsMakePovertyHistory pic.twitter.com/VvZpKZVzS7
