History and description
The stadium officially opened on the 16th of May 2019 with a match between Al-Duhail and Al-Sadd, during the 2019 Amir Cup final.
It was built to host the games of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Preparations to build the stadium started in 2014, although proper construction of the stadium started in 2016.
Al Janoub was supposed to be completed towards the end of 2018, but owing to delays, the stadium was instead completed in 2019.
The inspiration behind the stadium is the traditional dhow boats in tribute to Al Wakrah’s seafaring past.
Al Janoub has a capacity of 40 000 seats, but after the World Cup the top tier will be removed and the stadium will have a capacity of 20 000 seats.
The stadium is located on the outskirts of Al Wakrah town. Roads, parking lots, and residential neighbourhoods surround the beautiful stadium.
Seven World Cup matches will be played at Al Janoub Stadium. Six of them will be group stage games and one knockout game in the Round of 16.
