There is no expectation that Kelly Khumalo, former girlfriend of slain Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa, will be charged in regards to his 2014 murder. This is according to Khumalo’s lawyer Magdalene Moonsamy, who is on a watching brief at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria, monitoring proceedings for Khumalo during Meyiwa’s murder trial.

“There is absolutely no way that there is the minimum doubt. That narrative (that Khumalo may be charged) must be removed from society, because the reality is that there are five accused that are sitting in this dock. So, let us focus on the accused, and whether the plea that they have submitted is indeed one that is correct – that is what we need to focus on,” says Moonsamy.

Moonsamy would not be drawn into saying whether they will instituting lawsuits against those who might have been involved in reputational damage by allegations of Khumalo being involved in the murder of Meyiwa, which has been a hot topic of public opinion since the incident eight years ago.

Two years ago, the NPA announced a breakthrough in the investigation when Muzi Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Ziphozonnke Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Ntuli were charged with Meyiwa’s murder, attempted murder of other witnesses, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearms, and possession of ammunition.
Earlier on Friday, all five pleaded not guilty to all the charges, after a more than hour’s delay to kick-off of proceedings owing to the late coming of two accused based at the Leeuwkop prison in Johannesburg.
Last week the commencement of the murder trial hit a snag twice when counsel for accused No.: 5 Sifisokuhle Ntuli applied for a postponement on grounds that they were not prepared. They accused the state of releasing key witness statement on the eleventh hour, which they said prejudiced their client in terms of preparing their defense.
Meyiwa was shot dead in October 2014 at his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus. This happened in the presence of seven other people in the house including, Khumalo, her mother, her sister Zandi, Longwe Twala who was dating Zandi at the time, Meyiwa’s friends Mthokozisi Thwala and Tumelo Madlala, and Kelly Khumalo’s four-year-old son Christian.
This after three men entered the house and demanded money and cellphones, according to witness statements of those who were in the house. A fight is said to have ensued and the former Orlando Pirates keeper was shot.
