Independent political analyst Precious Lugayeni believes the African National Congress (ANC) will have to form a coalition with other political parties to be able to lead eThekwini Municipality in Durban.

The ANC is leading the metro with 42.02%, the DA has 25.62% and the EFF 10.8%.

In 2016, the ANC won the eThekwini metro with 56% of the vote –  a 5% drop from the 2011 local elections.

Lugayeni believes the coalitions need to be regulated so that voters can have a say.

“If you look at the coalitions elsewhere, not only eThekwini, they have been disastrous. They have been changing mayors and all those things – the voters have no say on who their preferred party goes to coalition with. That is why there are talks that the coalition need to be regulated so that at least we know how to go into coalition, what the role of the voters as it stands now, the party decides to go to a coalition with any party, without going to the voters,” says Lugayeni.
