1 912 more South Africans infected with COVID-19, 66 succumb to the illness

The National Health Department has reported 1 912 new coronavirus cases in the country, taking the total number of infected South Africans to 723 682.

Sixty six new deaths have been recorded. “Twenty one are from the Eastern Cape, 2 from Gauteng, seven from the Free State, eight from KwaZulu-Natal, two from Mpumalanga, 18 from the North West, 4 from the Northern Cape and 4 from the Western Cape,” says the department.

Health officials say some of the deaths occurred in the past 24-48 hours.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has conveyed his condolences to the grieving families.

This week, President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed concern over what he termed worrying signs that South Africans are not adhering to protective measures, such as wearing masks and social distancing.

The President said this was particularly serious as the country approaches the December holiday period when many people will let their guard down.

While dismissing reports that the country is about to go back to a higher level COVID-19 lockdown, Ramaphosa promised to address the nation next week on what is to happen next.
