SuperSport pulls plug on Ashwin Willemse, Nick Mallet and Naas Botha

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The three SuperSport presenters involved in last weekend’s incident on air, won’t be on screen this weekend. Ashwin Willemse, Nick Mallet and Naas Botha have all stood down, but none have been suspended.

SuperSport has confirmed that the three will still be paid according to their contracts. SuperSport says they made the decision because the issue has not yet been resolved.

They have appointed independent counselor Advocate Vincent Maleka to review the incident and make recommendations to SuperSport’s management by June 11.

Last weekend, Willemse walked off the set while on air, accusing Mallet and Botha of treating him like a quota player, and saying he refused to be patronised by individuals who played during the apartheid era.

The incident followed the Lions’ 42-24 win over the Brumbies at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. SuperSport host Motshidisi Mohono called the incident “unfortunate” as Willemse put down his papers and walked off camera.

In a matter of minutes the video clip went viral on social media.
