The initiator of the hearing into the nine EFF MPs,  Penelope Magona-Dano, has recommended that they should be found guilty for their conduct during President Cyril Ramaphosa budget vote speech and debate on the 9th and 10th of June 2022.

They are Naledi Chirwa, Anthony Matumba, Isaac Mafanya, Natasha  Ntlangwini, Sinawo Tambo, Mothusi Montwedi, Yoilswa Yako  Babalwa Mathulelwa and Paulnita Marais.

Tambo was the only one who testified.

They were mainly charged for contempt of Parliament by the Powers and Privileges Committee.

The tenth MP Nonhlanhla Mkhonto, who was also charged, was found not guilty as it was discovered that she was never in the House.

Magona-Dano says, “The eight, they just simply said we are not guilty. There is no other evidence before the committee to decide on whether to weigh who is telling the truth, what really happened. Only one evidence that is before (the committee).”

She recommended that the EFF MPs be found guilty.

“In my respectful submission, I request the honourable committee to find all these eight members guilty as well as  honourable Tambo who is the 9th one. There is evidence during cross-examination to counter every defence that he placed  before the honourable committee members. Honourable Mkhonto formally must be found not guilty as stated before,” she says.
