Cele, Chikunga to meet SAPS top brass amid E Cape taxi violence

Police Minister Bheki Cele, Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and the Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane are this morning expected to meet commanders of policing districts affected by taxirelated violence in Port St Johns.

Six people have been killed and six vehicles torched in the violence.

The meeting, to be held in Port St Johns, will seek to find a lasting solution to the ongoing taxi violence between two warring taxi associations.

The Ministers and the Premier will also engage stakeholders including the community on the matter.

Cele’s spokesperson Lirandzu Themba says, “Minister Cele together with the Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga and the Premier of the Eastern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane will engage the management of the SAPS in the province on their responses to the taxi disputes. At the same time, [they will] engage the community and relevant stakeholders in an effort to bring lasting solutions to the taxi-related violence.”
