UN Security Council fails to adopt draft resolutions on Gaza

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The United Nations Security Council has failed to adopt two competing draft resolutions seeking to address the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.

First, a US draft calling for humanitarian pauses was vetoed by Russia and China, garnering 10 votes in favour, with two abstentions.

Moments later, a Russian text calling for an immediate ceasefire received only 4 votes in favour, with the United States and the United Kingdom voting no with 10 abstentions.

The Council, true to form, has again failed to find consensus as the humanitarian situation in the Gaza enclave goes from bad to worse with each passing hour.

Russia and China criticized the US draft due to concerns that it would give Israel the green light to continue with a planned ground invasion of Gaza rather than bringing the conflict, which has already killed thousands, to heel.

Russia’s draft calling for an immediate ceasefire failed by not receiving the minimum nine votes in favour. Some members said they couldn’t support the text because it didn’t mention Israel’s right to self-defence nor did the process embarked on by Russia allow for consultations before calling for a vote.
