Mining industry given assurances that energy crisis being addressed

Head of project management in the Presidency, Rudi Dicks has assured the mining industry that greater efforts are being made in addressing the country’s energy crisis.

He was part of a panel at the Johannesburg Mining Indaba under way in Sandton, northern Johannesburg.

The panel is looking into the work of the National Logistics Crisis Committee, the Joint Initiative to Fight Crime and Corruption and the National Energy Crisis Committee in assisting the mining sector.

Issues of illegal mining, the energy crisis and climate change have been cited as problematic areas. Dicks believes the country is making progress in addressing these impediments.

“I am quite happy that we can collaborate with different parts of business to support us and we are able to turn the current situation around. Electricity is important, it’s one of the biggest constraints on growth. The minister has been in the forefront in driving the reform in ensuring that we do fix Eskom and get additional megawatts. More recently for instance the support of business in assisting to project manage in getting the three Kusile units that collapsed during November last year, the first unit to come back on stream two months ahead of schedule.”
