The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department has seized 72 taxis operating without driving permits in the province.

The department says more than 50 vehicles were impounded at Greytown in the midlands where it is reported that illegal operators have invaded the taxi rank, threatening to take over the rank and operations.

Other areas which are being targeted include uMzimkhulu, KwaNongoma, Newcastle, Harding, Kranskop and Mandeni.

The department has just introduced joint operations led by the Department’s Public Transport Enforcement Service known as Operation “Shanela” that will target areas in the province experiencing instability in the taxi industry.

“In total there were 72 vehicles which were impounded for operating without permits, 46 were suspended and 47 charges were issued against minor defects. The MEC  Nkonyeni has welcomed this as a major important step in terms of repurposing, reviving Shanela to make sure we are able to intervene decisively in the taxi industry,” says Provincial Transport spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane.
