SA police on continuous crowd management training: SAPS

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Police Minister Bheki Cele says public order policing is continuously being re-assessed and enhanced. He was responding to a written question in the National Council of Provinces from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) this week.

The Party wanted to know whether police were being retrained amid concern about violence and brutality being unleashed on civilians. Police were again found wanting in crowd control following the recent violence and looting in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal.

Police ministry Spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba says police officers are trained on public order policing on a continuous basis.

“The SAPS (South African Police Service) is on a continuous basis capacitating and reskilling its members, especially in the public order policing environment where members are trained in crowd control related learning programmes in order to enhance their knowledge and skills in order to execute their functions effectively and efficiently. We are also being informed by the SAPS that refresher courses are continuously being conducted. This means that thousands of pop officers have been trained through numerous courses and have been found competent in proper crowd control management, ” says Themba.

In Gauteng, there has been a damning diagnosis following last month’s mass looting and unrest. Experts say South Africa’s police and intelligence service are not efficient and have not dealt with security threats effectively.
