63 uncounted votes could tilt balance of forces in Top Six: Analyst

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Political analyst Sithembile Mbete says the issue of the 63 uncounted votes has the potential to tilt the balance of forces among the top six.

The SABC has reliably learned that delegates from KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo are on standby to go to court on Wednesday if it is not resolved. There’s growing dissatisfaction among some African National Congress (ANC) members after reports of the uncounted votes.

Some believe that a re-count would affect the outcome of the election for the post of secretary-general. Free State premier Ace Magashule defeated former KwaZulu-Natal secretary-general Senzo Mchunu by a small margin.

Mbete explains the significance of the uncounted votes.

“It will break an impasse, stalemate, court routes are being explored but there’s also a factional approach to this. The Ramaphosa faction want it resolved, want those votes to be counted, the other faction led by Supra Mahumapelo are challenging the acceptance of those votes, because I guess they fear that once they get accepted, it might change the outcome.”
