A total of 60 Christmas babies have been born at 16 hospitals in Limpopo between midnight and six o’clock Tuesday morning.

Three girls arrived at exactly midnight. Two were delivered at Siloam Hospital outside Thohoyandou and one at Nkhensani Hospital in Giyani.

The Health Department says the figure is expected to change during the day.

Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba says all babies born on Christmas Day in the province will leave the hospitals with birth certificates.

Meanwhile, Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga has showered with gifts the first baby to be born on Christmas Day in the city’s public hospital.

Baby Eva Junior Tshabalala was born after 1 AM Tuesday morning at the George Mukhari Academic hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, outside Pretoria.

The hospital has already delivered seven babies and is expecting to deliver 22 Christmas babies in total.

Msimanga will visit seven hospitals in the city where 135 babies are expected to be born on Tuesday. He says they will give baby hampers to ensure that new mothers are not overwhelmed.

He says: “The baby hampers have essentials you would need on the first days of the child being born. Your nappies, blankets, toys, all formula you might need. We felt that it is good to give something back to our future MECs, presidents, doctors and nurses. We need to plant a seed and that is what we are doing.”
