The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 5 062 new COVID-19 cases in South Africa. This brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 769 927.

The increase represents an 18.4% positivity rate. The majority of new cases are from Gauteng (46%), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (29%).

The institute says there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases reported as a result of the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health.

“Today, the National Department of Health reports 15 deaths and of these, six occurred in the past 24 -48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 100 348 to date,” says the institute in a statement.

24 370 285 tests have been conducted in both the public and private sectors.
