Reading Time: 2 minutes

Hundreds of people from all walks of life gathered at Durban’s beachfront to mark the 4th International Yoga Day. The event was hosted by the Consulate General of India in partnership with the Sivananda World Peace Foundation.

People gathered to embrace the health benefits of the age old practice of Yoga, an ancient art form combining the physical and the spiritual. It is practiced by millions around the world. International Yoga Day was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.

“Yoga strives for the balance between body and mind and it has now been proven beneficial for several medical conditions also for general wellbeing and health. It is also suggested in several countries, also to cardiac patients to have a better lifestyle,” says Consulate General of India, Dr Shashank Vikram.

Politicians also took time off from their busy schedules to celebrate the day. Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi has attended International Yoga Day since its inception and hopes Yoga will become part of school learning. “I have become a very strong enthusiast of Yoga and I really feel that it is something that should actually be entrenched in our nation through introducing it in our schools. “

Enthusiasts find the practice both physically and mentally enriching. ” I really did feel united with all this positive energies around me, they mentioned it does relieve stress which I did feel I felt balanced and very vibrant it really relaxed my mind, body and my soul.”

More sessions are planned in Durban throughout the week to celebrate the Day. Yogashen Pillay
