35 parties want an election rerun

Reading Time: 2 minutes

35 political parties say the Independent Electoral Commission has missed a deadline to respond to their gievances. They say they have asked for:

  • An independent audit, not affiliated and captured by government and
  • A rerun of the elections which will be inclusive and well safeguarded

In a joint statement released on Friday they say they walked out of the National Party Liaison Committee meeting on Friday because their complaints have not been taken seriously.

The 35 independent party media statement 2019

The media in various briefings and questions already proved that this election is not free and fair it is irregular and not transparent. The IEC has admitted publicly and in NPLC meetings that there have been irregularities and some people have been arrested already. With that being the case there is a clear indication that there is due course not to continue this process without a proper and independent investigation.

35 Political parties across the full political spectrum are part of this collective. The IEC has already labeled us as disgruntled, we in the strongest terms object to this because we represent millions of South Africans from all walks of life.

Attempts in this morning’s NPLC meeting has already been made to stop us from engaging the media and taking this matter forward by reminding us of the pledge signed. We were also intimidated by the judge with the intention to prevent us from continuing our actions. Due to the stance taken by the IEC, members of the 35 parties who were in the NPLC walked out of the meeting because the IEC are not taking our objections and complaints seriously.

Yesterday we submitted a grievance and received an acknowledgement letter. The IEC already missed this deadline and thus forced us to engage South Africans and the media.

We now call upon our constituents as well as our independent observers to support and assist us.

We have asked the following:

  1. We demand an independent audit, not affiliated and captured by government and
  2. A rerun of the elections which will be inclusive and well safeguarded
