National Police Commissioner, Khehla Sitole, has condemned the wounding of three police members during a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Rustenburg, North West.

A security officer and a bystander were also wounded in the incident.

Police say the armoured cash vehicle was rammed off the road by the assailants’ car.  They responded to the scene and a shootout ensued.

The suspects fled empty handed in two bakkies and a sedan.

While fleeing, they came across a marked police vehicle and fired multiple shots wounding three policemen.

Two are in a stable condition in hospital, while the third officer is in a critical condition. He was airlifted to a hospital in Johannesburg due to the severity of his injuries.
