The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 3 118 new COVID-19 cases in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed infections to 3 665 149. This increase represents an 8.7% positivity rate.

The majority of new cases on Wednesday are from Gauteng (36%), followed by Western Cape (21%).

The institute says there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases because of the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department.

“Today, the National Department of Health reports 110 deaths and of these, six occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours. This brings the total fatalities to 98 978 to date,” says the institute in a statement.

22 964 127 tests have been conducted in both the public and private sectors.
