26 SABC workers fired

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Twenty-six South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) contract workers employed in the TV Licenses Department have been fired for taking part in an illegal strike.

They were dismissed last week for demanding permanent employment and all accompanying benefits.

However, the Media Workers Association of South Africa (Mwasa) says their two-month go-slow was legal and that they had obtained a certificate from the CCMA authorising them to strike.

Mwasa claims the workers did not receive dismissal letters.  It is not clear if this has had any impact on the collection of license fees.

“Despite numerous attempts by Management to discourage them from continuing with this unlawful action they continued with the action. As a result, they were subjected to an internal disciplinary process which was in compliance with the requirements of procedural and substantive fairness. The SABC management followed all the required prescripts in arriving at the pronouncement, based on the submission presented before the aforesaid disciplinary process,” says Acting SABC Spokesperson Mmoni Seapolelo.
