Free Gender chairperson Funeka Soldaat says there have been several attacks on black lesbians in the townships since 2016.

The LGBTI rights organisation, Free Gender, says a 23-year-old lesbian has been killed in an alleged homophobic attack at Lwandle in Strand outside Cape Town.

It says  Noxolo Xakeka was stabbed to death during New Year’s Day celebrations.

She was with her friends when a man allegedly teased her about her sexuality and an argument started.

Xakeka was stabbed three times and later died in hospital from her wounds.

Free Gender chairperson Funeka Soldaat says the suspect has been arrested. She says there have been several attacks on black lesbians in the townships since 2016.

“It would be nice if the issue of Noxolo raises the issue of women who continue to be mutilated by men because of choices that they make in their lives. It can’t just be a lesbian issue. It has to be a community issue. It’s a human rights issue. It has to be a women’s rights issue.”
